Information about Ahlberg Class this term:
The new school year is upon us and it has already been a busy and productive start to the term. The children have been working hard over the summer holiday and I thank you for the tremendous homework that the children have been keen to share with the class. It looks as though you have all been busy and have done some wonderful things during the six weeks. Feel free to pop into class to have a look at our display of the children’s holiday diaries.
We have started the term with a small project on our class author, Allan Ahlberg. If you get the chance, please try to share one of his books with your child – there are many lovely ones to choose from. We will soon be starting our topic on ‘Chocolate’ and it really is as much fun as it sounds! As well as learning about where chocolate comes from, the children will be taste testing different chocolate, designing and making their own chocolate bar and box to present it in, as well as using the internet to research the topic. Literacy lessons will be linked to the topic as children learn about Aztec myths, explanations about the production of chocolate, instruction writing based on their making of chocolate and also chocolate-related poetry.
In Numeracy, the children will consolidate their skills in place value by partitioning numbers and also ordering and positioning numbers on a number line, recognise and continue number sequences, multiply and divide numbers by 10 and 100, identify doubles and halves of numbers, develop their addition and subtraction skills, solve word problems, identify 2-d and 3-d shapes and continue to develop their times tables recall. This half-term sees the whole school focussing on handwriting and presentation. Whenever possible, please ensure that this is also a focus for the children when they are completing their homework tasks. We are expecting to see joined up handwriting using the letter formation taught to them in school. In addition to Forest School and trumpet lessons for Year 4, the children have our Harvest Festival and a visit to the cinema to look forward to this half-term.
