June 2012
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,
Welcome back to the last half of the school year. It is only 5 weeks and 4 days until we break up for the summer holiday so we need to make the most of every minute of it!
We had a really super end to the last half term. The trip to Bath and West Show was fantastic and a truly memorable occasion for all the children. The Jubilee celebrations were also very successful and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who worked like Trojans especially during the last week of term. Also I would like to thank all the teaching assistants for the over and above amount of work they did to ensure that our children have the best possible opportunities both inside and outside of school. The sheer amounts of high quality and tasty food produced from the school kitchens was very impressive indeed.
Now we return to many sporting activities over the next few weeks. Please ensure that your child has a tee shirt, shorts and trainers in school every day, as well as their swimming kit on the necessary day. We are experiencing large amounts of children with no kit regularly and it is frustrating for them and the teachers who spend a lot of time organising super PE lessons.
As you are aware the Governors of both Grass Royal and Pen Mill voted to apply for academy conversion, which is the initial step needed to enable the DfE to decide whether we can convert to become an Academy. The planned intention to convert is October 1st 2012. There will shortly be a letter coming out to you with more information and to gather your views. A meeting is planned for 19th June at 6pm at Pen Mill for the parents of both schools. This will give you an opportunity to find out more and raise any questions. Please put this important date in your diary and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the meeting.
Well done to:

who represented our school at High Fives and won the tournament!! How fantastic are they. Also the wonderful coaching from Mrs Court and Miss Stringer deserves a mention as do our supporters club. Mrs Williams and Mrs Miller have attended just about every match and their support has been much appreciated.
Also a special mention must go to the school choir who have been selected to sing with The Drifters at the Octagon theatre when they are on tour in the autumn. They were so impressive singing at the Music Spectacular that they will be given pride of place on the stage. We will let you know more details in the future.
A big well done.
We seem to have a bit of a plague of creatures at the moment. We are crawling with head lice and threadworms at the moment and we need some help with regard to clearing up both ends!! Please use half term as an opportunity to check every one's hair and stools. Both conditions are very contagious but easily remedied. We are also having reports of an increase in verrucas. Children can still swim with them but they need to be treated and then covered. It is possible to buy latex boots to wear for swimming and we are happy for children to wear them if that helps.

Staffing
There will be the normal amount of change to staffing again this year. We a happy to announce the second pregnancy of Miss Clements, so she will be leaving at the end of term, as will her job share partner Mrs Chant. Temporary staff Mrs Fysh and Miss Arnold will also be leaving, as will Mr Edwards who has secured a teaching post nearer to home in Taunton. We wish them all much luck and thank them so much for all they have done for the children of Grass Royal. On Tuesday we interviewed and appointed Miss Rebecca James who will teach in Year 5, Miss Jenna Coates and Mr George Callaghan who will teach in Year 3 / 4 and Mrs Rachel Harris who will teach in Year 6. We are confident that team Grass Royal will go from strength to strength.
We will be issuing class lists in the next few days so that all children will know their class teacher in readiness for Transition day on the 4th July.
I know that this last half term of the school year will be wonderful, please come and join us at as many events as possible.
Judith.
