The children learn about people and important events and developments from recent and more distant times in locality, in the British Isles and in other parts of the world. Children learn about these aspects of history by finding out about the past, using a variety of sources of information, recognising that the past is represented and can be interpreted in different ways. They use dates and historical terms to place events, people and developments in time.
The children investigate and learn about people, places and environments at different scales, in the United Kingdom and overseas. They learn how places are linked to one another and to the wider world. Studying geography involves fieldwork, and developing and using a range of geographical enquiry skills.
The children are given the opportunities to participate in a number of 'Design and Make' tasks throughout their four years in the school. They are taught a design of process and therefore become aware of a number of procedures that take place before a product of artefact is produced. The subject fosters teamwork and cooperation, as well as the chance to promote individual creativity and invention. It also encourages children to evaluate their tasks and efforts.
Pupils are given a variety of opportunities to develop their creative and imaginative ability through learning skills, techniques and the use of a range of materials and tools. They are also able to discuss and review the work of famous artists throughout history. Much of the children's work is displayed around the school in order to share their approaches with all the children in the school.
A comprehensive programme of activities and skills is taught, promoting health and fitness. All pupils have two sessions of PE a week that take place in the playground, the hall or in our purpose-built gymnasium. Gymnastics, athletics, games, dance, swimming and outdoor adventure activities are taught throughout the year. We encourage a competitive spirit while recognising the value of cooperation, fair play and teamwork. A range of activities are offered as extra-curricular clubs and the school is frequently represented at sporting events. We have football and netball teams and both competitive and friendly matches are played throughout the year. Visiting sports coaches have worked with us in school to develop skills in rugby, cricket, basketball and football.
The children participate in class activities which include listening to and appreciating a variety of music, learning and singing songs and using a range of instruments to compose and perform pieces of music. Guitar lessons and lessons in playing a vareity of brass instruments are available from visiting music specialists. The children work in groups of three or less for these lessons and can borrow instruments from school in order to practice at home.
